Ali Mahtabifard, MD is double board-certified in general and cardiothoracic surgery with extensive training in the comprehensive management and advanced surgical care of thoracic conditions and malignancies. Dr. Mahtabifard is highly regarded as a leading expert in minimally invasive thoracic surgery, with expertise in cutting-edge treatments for lung cancer and lung metastases, esophageal cancer, gastroesophageal reflux disease, hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), as well as mediastinal, chest wall and airway disorders.
Dr. Mahtabifard takes pride in providing the most advanced and effective treatments for his patients, and is highly involved within the medical community and field of thoracic surgery. His research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Journal of Immunotherapy, Clinical Cancer Research, Molecular Therapy, Human Gene Therapy, Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and Thoracic Surgery Clinics. He has also presented at numerous meetings including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.
Dr. Mahtabifard is the co-editor and has written multiple chapters in the highly-regarded medical textbook “Atlas of Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery (VATS),” which is now a staple for thoracic surgeons worldwide. The cutting-edge medical book provides integral information for surgeons and residents across the globe by presenting step-by-step instructions for the latest minimally invasive techniques that bring faster recovery and improved patient outcomes. Dr. Mahtabifard has also authored multiple book chapters in a variety of Thoracic Surgery textbooks.
Dr. Mahtabifard received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley and his medical degree from New York Medical College. He completed a general surgery internship at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center of New York and then completed his general surgery residency at the world-renowned Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard University. During residency, he also completed a two-year research fellowship in thoracic oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, one of the most prestigious cancer facilities in the world. Dr. Mahtabifard then completed his first cardiothoracic fellowship at the University of California at Davis, followed by a second fellowship in advanced and minimally invasive thoracic surgery (VATS) at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. At Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, Dr. Mahtabifard is a faculty member of the John Wayne Cancer Institute.
